  1. THE DRAGON OF THE ISHTAR GATE 5 - A black ink and black pencil drawing on a 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the book, "THE DRAGON OF THE ISHTAR GATE," by L. Sprague de Camp, published by Donning in 1982.

Mr. de Camp is one of my favorite writers, this is one of his five historical novels that I own. It was a pleasure to read and illustrate the book.

de Camp is responsible for bringing back the works of Robert E. Howard. In 1950 he urged Gnome Press' owner Martin Greenberg to reprint Howard's Conan stories in several volumes. The Conan stories were originally published in the 1930s and 1940s in the Weird Tales pulp magazine.

However, in role as editor of the books, de Camp decided that the stories needed some re-writing, and he took on the task. Sadly, the changes he made diluted the power and integrity of Howard's work. It is good to see that current publishers of Howard's stories are restoring his original work.
